The old death row room was turned into a learning environment for students during the early 2000's.

This book was born from the questions of family, friends, and strangers who were curious about my work as a teacher in Folsom State Prison in California.

This teacher certainly had a captive audience every day.

Excerpt From the Book, 'My Life in Prison.'

He wasn’t the first to commit the deed, but he was the first to my knowledge to do it inside the prison walls.

Other staff members have lost their lives on prison grounds, but at the hands of others.

Just a few months earlier, this particular officer notarized a document for me. He certainly was an amiable person and always seemed to be of good cheer. Just goes to show you that appearances can be deceiving. What wasn’t deceiving was the fact that this individual

was in a tower above Blood Alley in close proximity to the Education Building. Blood Alley got its name from all of the frequent stabbings and shootings that happened over the decades. That little stretch of yard, not even a block long, was so notorious that I’m sure prisoners heard about it before they arrived at Folsom.

On the yard, only officers assigned to towers carry guns. Officers on the ground have a variety of other deterrents.
