Prison is a place where you have to be alert from the moment you walk through the gate until the time your shift is over.

Prison is a place where the noise is nonstop and a quiet moment is a rarity except maybe for a few brief moments in the restroom.

Prison is a place where often meanness prevails for those who have to prove their power.

Aristotle-

"Educating the Mind Without Educating the Heart is no Education at all."

The old death row room was turned into a learning environment for students during the early 2000's.

This book was born from the questions of family, friends, and strangers who were curious about my work as a teacher in Folsom State Prison in California.

This teacher certainly had a captive audience every day.

“I found this book to be very interesting. I don't know anyone that's ever been in prison. I think it would be very difficult to work in that kinds of environment. The writer made it a positive situation for the prisoners and herself. I read the book so fast that I wanted there to be more. I really like the writers style and the fact that it made me feel that I was with her in the classroom. I laughed and I cried. It was just a joy to read..”

Wow a great read
“Excellent book about teaching in Folsom Prison in California. Toni Ukkerd is amazing. She was able to deal not only with prisoners but prison staff and come out still full of love and light..”
“Told from an employee’s prospective, this book speaks to the problems inherent in most institutions and the difficulties in addressing them. The book describes the plight of employees who can easily fall victim to a flawed system and outlines one woman’s means of coping. Quotations and Heart Lesson are beneficial tools for life on the outside as well as within prison walls..”

He wasn’t the first to commit the deed, but he was the first to my knowledge to do it inside the prison walls.

Other staff members have lost their lives on prison grounds, but at the hands of others.

Just a few months earlier, this particular officer notarized a document for me. He certainly was an amiable person and always seemed to be of good cheer. Just goes to show you that appearances can be deceiving. What wasn’t deceiving was the fact that this individual

was in a tower above Blood Alley in close proximity to the Education Building. Blood Alley got its name from all of the frequent stabbings and shootings that happened over the decades. That little stretch of yard, not even a block long, was so notorious that I’m sure prisoners heard about it before they arrived at Folsom.

On the yard, only officers assigned to towers carry guns. Officers on the ground have a variety of other deterrents.

  • There was a point where I could tell that this job that I enjoyed so much was taking a toll on me.
